InConcert Sierra’s Educational Outreach
This is a very busy time for InConcert Sierra!
Educational Concerts – This past Friday, over 400 third-graders participated in a world of discovery with the Zodiac Trio. We’ll have photos and more information in next month’s program, on our website, and in The Union. Thank you to Sheila Baker & Charles Lindquist for the continued sponsorship of this annual program.
More scholarships and another new program – PRIVATE LESSONS SCHOLARSHIP! Last season, we were moved to add a second ‘runner-up’ Spring Teen scholarship based on the application of bassoonist, Cedric Dermy. Cedric was in the 11th grade at Nevada Union High School and would really benefit from having private instruction. He wanted to learn the art of reed making as well as furthering his bassoon studies.
“Ever since I was young I have always wanted to play the bassoon.” said Cedric. Cedric’s NUHS band teacher, Ken Carter, noted,“ I believe the only thing holding him back is the lack of private lessons – with them I believe he can become an accomplished musician.”
With our scholarship, local bassoonist Dave Riddles very generously gave Cedric private lessons for a year. Cedric’s progress has been stunning according to Carter, who noted that he heard a bassoon in the room where Cedric’s lessons were being held, and he thought it was Dave Riddles playing, yet it was actually Cedric!
This season, an anonymous donor has created an endowment in memory of her mother, Laura Everett, for a “Private Lessons Scholarship” program with NUHS band director Ken Carter and InConcert Sierra. The scholarship will provide private music lessons at either a discount or free to promising students recommended by band teachers. “This is a great way for us to directly impact a young musician by going straight through the teachers,” says Ken Hardin, InConcert Sierra’s Artistic Director.
Our first recipient is young oboist Nelson Bastian, a tenth grader at Nevada Union High School. He will be receiving lessons from local teacher and oboist Murray Campbell.
NJUHSD scholarships – This is the first season for InConcert Sierra to take part in the Nevada Joint Union High School District’s Annual Senior Scholarship Award Program administered by Barbara Ross. We have received sixteen applications from several local high schools to review prior to awarding two $1000 scholarships to deserving and aspiring young musicians. This is in addition to our Spring Teen Scholarship.
