Barbara Drew, board member
Music feeds the soul & communicates more than words can ever express
Barbara grew up on a small dairy farm in Wisconsin with four siblings, all of whom took music lessons and played and sang together. Barbara sang in a trio with two sisters and a third sister accompanied on the piano every Sunday in church and occasionally, on the radio. She took piano lessons and played first clarinet in the high school band.
Barbara became a professional nurse and helped establish the first Coronary Care Unit in Evanston, Illinois. Currently, she is a Professor of Cardiac Nursing and Clinical Professor of Medicine in Cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Her signature courses at UCSF have been in clinical electrocardiography which she has taught to medical students, residents, and graduate nursing students for 35 years. In 2009, she received UCSF’s Distinguished Teaching Award. The primary goals of Barbara’s research have been to improve cardiac monitoring techniques and clinical practices in hospital settings. Her work has shaped the development of commercial cardiac monitors.
Barbara and her husband Dr. Denis Drew, a retired cardiologist, moved to Nevada City in 2015. Barbara looks forward in her retirement to getting back to her music roots and joining the InConcert Sierra family to keep the tradition of high quality music offerings thriving in this wonderful community.
