From the Lone Ranger to the orchestra

Fred Hall
Fred Hall’s love of classical music began unexpectedly. After listening to The Lone Ranger on the radio for years, one night Fred actually listened to the orchestra’s brilliant color in the background music. Fred was hooked!
His first attempts at making music came when he answered the junior high band’s call for a tuba player. The high school marching and concert bands followed logically enough. Then a wonderfully improbable thing happened in his sophomore year. The Peninsula Symphony was formed, rehearsed at Fred’s high school, and needed a tuba player. That experience exposed him to the inner voices of works by Wagner, Franck, Tschaikowski, Smetana and others.
During college, Fred played concerts with the marching band and joined the orchestra. Highlights of his college music career included playing Gabrielli antiphonally across a Moorish courtyard and having Aaron Copland conduct Copland. Fred began singing in church choirs during high school and continued for many years.
Moving here and singing with Ken Hardin at Sierra College brought Fred into InConcert Sierra and the Sierra Master Chorale. Now singing with the Chorale gives him great joy, as does helping InConcert bring superb artists to our community. Fred says he couldn’t begin to have that impact when he lived in the Bay Area.
