Congratulations to Aneka Qing Torgrimson
13-year old Aneka Torgrimson was awarded a full-size cello at our February 20, 2017 concert. Last month’s artist, San Francisco Symphony Associate Principal Cellist Peter Wyrick, helped us present the cello (and tuned it!)
Aneka is a 13 year-old student at Grass Valley Charter School. Her music teacher is Anna Gold who highly recommended her for this award. Aneka wrote a beautiful letter of request that thoroughly explained her passion for music and, in particular, the cello. We’d like to share a little with you…
“I was originally born in China and adopted when I was a year old. I was a piano student for a little over two years before I was introduced to the cello. One day I accompanied my sister to a recorder lesson with Anna Gold. I remember Anna opening a large case and taking out her 230-year-old cello. She asked me ‘do you want to play it?” I was so nervous as I ran the blow across the strings. The sound it made was so rich and deep I realized that the cello and I had found each other. I have been taking cello lessons from Anna Gold ever since, three years now.”
Currently, Aneka is the principal cellist for the Music in the Mountains’ Youth Orchestra. She has participated in string trios and quartets, performing at weddings. She has composed music for projects for both the Nevada City School of the Arts and Community Asian Theater of the Sierra (CATS.) Her string duet competed in and won the 2016 MIM Young Musicians’ Competition in that category. She is planning on attending music camps this summer. She definitely seeks out opportunities to explore her passion.
Aneka’s letter continued: “I have been inspired as both a musician and a young composer by the InConcert Sierra (ICS) performances that I have been able to attend thanks to the generosity of ICS providing free admission to students. The most amazing experience I have had at one of these concerts was when I was fortunate to hear Amit Peled play on Pablo Casals’ 284-year-old cello. I love how he stopped the concert midway to speak to all the students in the audience and encourage us to practice. I will never forget that concert.”
This cello will allow Aneka to transition from a three-quarter size to a full size instrument.
Additionally, she wrote that she will “not only make use of this wonderful gift by practicing, I would use it to continue to grow as a musician and explore new opportunities to advance my musical abilities. Being a musician is an important part of my life and it always will be.”
Thank you to Marlene Soldani for donating the cello to InConcert Sierra. Thus far this season, we have also placed a student trombone in the hands of Lyman Gilmore 6th grader Lucas Mackey.
