“Poetry in Song”

Composers Project students – first composition of the season!

The student composers are Baraka Anderson, Maura Blair, Kieran Dickson, Jaxon English, Lydia Fuller-Hall, Athena Giuliani, Ian Hayes, Kate Hershberger, Levi Krautkramer, Nikita Khryapin, Noah Prescott, Jamie Thomas-Rose

This first concert will be “Poetry in Song,” for which each student has chosen a poem/text and set it to music for voice and one instrument. Mark tasks the students to not only choose a poem, but to decipher it, learn about the author, and internalize the entire piece in order to discover the musical structure that the student deems appropriate. Their finished works will be performed by accomplished local singers (to be announced) and professional local or regional musicians: Ken Hardin & Lynn Schugren, piano; Sage Po, harp; and Jia-mo Chen, cello.

About the composers:

Mark Vance has been working with his students since September 14.  This is the first cycle that Mark has brought his Composers Project to InConcert Sierra, and it has been fascinating to watch his outstanding pedagogy that is enhanced by his humor, patience, and compassion. His music theory methodology is gently demanding and effective

Mark started his program over 20 years ago through the auspices of two other organizations, so we at InConcert felt that there had to be an added benefit to the class when he signed on with us. That benefit has been an amazing opportunity for the students to meet and work with world-class artists that visit InConcert through our Third Sunday series. Mark commented that he had no idea how special it would be for the students and for himself.
